Charlestown Harbour

Charlestown Harbour

Recognised as part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape UNESCO World Heritage Site, Charlestown Harbour tells the story of Cornwall’s industrial past. Built in the late 18th century by Charles Rashleigh, the harbour was designed to export copper and china clay from the booming mines around St Austell. Today, its granite quays, lock gates, and Grade II listed structures remain almost unchanged, making it the last open Georgian harbour of its kind in the UK.

Visitors can explore the Shipwreck Treasure Museum, take a guided tour of the harbour, or simply enjoy the sight of tall ships moored against a backdrop of rugged cliffs. With sandy coves on either side of the harbour, Charlestown is also a popular spot for a swim or a day on the beach. Combining history, culture, and natural beauty, Charlestown is a must-visit destination on Cornwall’s south coast.
