Carlyon Bay Beach

Carlyon Bay Beach

Carlyon Bay stretches for nearly two miles along the Cornish coast, offering three distinct sections of beach - Crinnis, Shorthorn, and Polgaver. Together, they form one of St Austell’s most recognisable stretches of shoreline. While the “sand” here is technically stent - a coarse mix of quartz and minerals left over from the tin and china clay industries - it still glitters in the sunshine and creates a unique texture underfoot. Crinnis, the most popular section, is the heart of Carlyon Bay and the area most visitors associate with the name.

This beach has a colourful history. Once home to the Cornwall Coliseum, a major entertainment venue that attracted big-name acts before closing in 2003, Carlyon Bay has long been a hub for both locals and holidaymakers. Today, while redevelopment plans linger in the background, the beach itself remains a vibrant destination. In the summer months, it transforms into a lively seaside spot, complete with pop-up food stalls, beach bars, and artisan craft sellers that bring a festival-like atmosphere to the bay.

Despite its size and popularity, Carlyon Bay still feels spacious, with room for families to set up for the day, couples to enjoy a seaside walk, or swimmers to take a dip in the clear waters of St Austell Bay. On sunnier days, the golden tones of the shoreline contrast beautifully with the turquoise sea, making it a photographer’s dream as well as a fantastic spot to unwind. Whether you’re here for the history, the food, or just a classic Cornish beach day, Carlyon Bay is a must-visit along Cornwall’s south coast.
