Pentewan Trail
The Pentewan Trail is a much-loved 7.4-mile route on the National Cycle Network, linking the market town of St Austell to the picturesque fishing village of Mevagissey. Photo taken May 2025, it highlights just how beautiful and inviting this part of Cornwall is.
Also known as the Pentewan Valley Trail, this gentle 4km stretch follows the bed of an old 19th-century narrow-gauge railway, once used to carry china clay and tin from St Austell to the docks at Pentewan. While ships haven’t docked here for more than half a century, you can still spot fascinating reminders of the area’s industrial heritage as you explore. Today, the once-busy harbour has been transformed into a freshwater basin, separated from the sea by the sandy beach - a peaceful reminder of Cornwall’s evolving landscape.
The trail is level and accessible, making it perfect for cycling, walking, running, or dog walking. Families love it for its safe paths, riverside views, and woodland setting. On our own visit, Wilfred and Sam cycled ahead while Megan strolled beside me as I pushed Jasmine in the pushchair. We stopped along the way for timeless adventures – a rope swing, splashing through the ford, and even a round of Pooh Sticks on one of the bridges, where children had turned their wellies into buckets for river play. It’s these little moments that make the trail such a joy for all ages.
Branching off the main route, you’ll also find access to Kings Wood, a broad-leaved woodland managed by the Woodland Trust. Rich in flora and fauna, with winding trails and elevated viewpoints, it’s a haven for dog walkers and nature enthusiasts alike. The higher paths reward you with sweeping views across the valley, especially in spring when the woodland floor bursts into colour.
For those planning a longer trip, the trail connects easily with other destinations. Pentewan Valley Cycle Hire offers bikes for all ages, and from here you can follow Sustrans Route 3 towards the Eden Project, or loop off towards the Lost Gardens of Heligan and Mevagissey. Walking enthusiasts can follow the trail to the beach at Pentewan and then join the South West Coast Path, continuing along the dramatic coastline to Mevagissey, before hopping on a bus back to London Apprentice.
Parking is convenient too, with several spots along the trail and a large free car park in Pentewan village. For food and drink, you’ll be spoiled for choice - whether it’s a beachside meal at the Ship Inn, tea and cake at the village café, or fine dining at the Kingswood Restaurant near London Apprentice. From here, it’s easy to start your walk or cycle, making it the perfect family day out.
